Market research (April 2003) suggests that people in Victoria are keen to explore health choices outside of conventional medicine. They require confidence in the training and qualifications of the person to whom they entrust their health. As well, they want a health practitioner who takes time to listen to them, they want to be able to choose who they see, and they want readily available services. They are limited, however, by their perception of what is available, by their confusion over what practice or practitioner to choose and by their concern regarding cost.
Through one-to-one consultation Options for Health will guide you through the complicated maze of alternative health by providing:
Consultations can be as short as a 1 – 2 hour appointment or can consist of an introductory appointment combined with one, two (or more) follow-up sessions. It is important that consumers of health care – whether it be alternative, complementary or conventional – take the time they need to understand, navigate and stay in charge of what can be an onerous system.
In addition I offer follow-up consultations for clients who are unsure how to assess their progress with a particular practitioner. To compliment this I teach critical feedback skills for those who wish to either stop going to a practitioner but want to give feedback before leaving, or those who want to continue but need to clear up specific concerns and are not sure how to go about it.
It is not uncommon for people to set unrealistic and unattainable fitness and dietary goals and then feel guilty when they do not succeed. The media is relentless in letting us know that in order to be healthy and age healthfully we need to be active and pay attention to what we eat. Many of us believe a toned body achieved at a gym and a fat-free, sugar-free and carbohydrate-free diet is what we should aspire to. But this definition may fly in the face of a person’s interest, attention span and capabilities.
Once people gain insight into their personal definition of what physically active means and tunes into what would personally engage them to achieve it (perhaps they discover an inner dancer, a closet runner or a undiscovered love of yoga) they are more likely to achieve long-term success.
Through a series of pre-paid appointments (a minimum of six) clients:
The first appointment is typically 1½ to 2 hours long. The reason for the length of this appointment is to work through an assessment tool designed to help guide future appointments as well as explore fitness and diet beliefs, goals, desires and possibilities. Subsequent appointments are 1 hour in duration. One of the reasons for 6 pre-paid appointments is to allow time for reflection, problem solving and creativity. Another reason is to provide accountability through what may be a challenging period of time thus further ensuring success. The client directs frequency of appointments.
